Moving? Here Are A Few Helpful Tips!

As a real estate agent, I think it is so easy to sometimes forget what it’s like to personally purchase, move and close on a new home. I wanted to discuss my personal experience with moving that my family and I got to experience this past month. 

Recently, my family and I had the opportunity to purchase a new home. This was something that we had not necessarily been planning on doing this year.  However, we knew that we were wanting a bigger home so I had been keeping an eye on what hit the current housing market. We ended up only looking at two homes and the second home that we looked at checked the majority of the boxes that we were looking for (no pun intended). We found a home with a larger lot, fenced in yard, and it had more space for our growing family. When we found out that we officially had our offer accepted we felt so many emotions. We were excited for the new home, sad to leave our home that we bought when we were first married, and overwhelmed because we were not sure where to start in the packing process. Yes, as a real estate agent I understand the personal struggle and sacrifice that purchasing a home has. The ups and downs when dealing with all the logistics involved with mortgage companies, inspections and timelines to get to closing day!

When it came to packing I think the best advice that we received was to make sure you mark every box so that you know what room it goes into when moving day arrives. Next, we started by decluttering. I believe we probably made about four trips to donate items so that we wouldn’t have to move things to the new house that we didn’t need. After that,  we started packing the items in closets and the basement that we didn’t use on a daily basis. When it came to the week of moving we started packing everything! We only left out the essentials and pretty much packed a bag of clothes for the remainder of the days that we would be in our old home. Having a packing plan is essential when planning a big move. 

On moving day we felt so blessed. We were able to use our company moving truck(Lucy)  to move items to the new home and we also had the amazing help of family and friends. We found that it worked really well to have someone stand at the front door and direct people as to where to take things as they were being brought in from the moving truck. 

Overall, I learned a lot about the small details that all have to come together to get to the big moving day and I believe that this process helped me as an agent to be even more aware of how stressful the process can be. I hope that a few of these tips can help someone else as they deal with the stress of a possible move. One of my goals as an agent is, “to help make the purchase of your home be as stress free as possible so that it is one less thing you have to worry about.”
